Gender, Sexuality, and False Dichotomies

Hank Green is one of my favorite people on the Internet. He and his brother John share one of the most prominent YouTube channels, VlogBrothers, and they talk about all kinds of stuff, from the fascinating and deeply profound to the nerdy and trivial. Today Hank posted this video addressing the whole concept of the gender binary and why it's an inadequate framework for understanding the incredible diversity of human experience (from physical sex to gender identity to physical and romantic attraction). If you've got 4 minutes, give it a watch:

Wasn't that a great video to share with people who think we're crazy and all this "trans stuff" is just in our heads? Life is, as he says, complicated. Or, put another way, as Hank's brother John often puts it, "the truth resists simplicity."

Anyway, I just had to share this with you, dear readers. Now I need to go to bed. Until next time, as Hank and his brother always like to say to one another, don't forget to be awesome.

  1. I wonder how many people in rural Utah/Idaho would be absolutely confused by this....

  2. Ok so this a bit off topic but it's somewhat related in a far fetched way...

So I was wondering if people with not enough hormones age faster or slower than other people? This could be compared to people with too much as well I suppose but it is a fact that people with Gender Identity issues could have that be related to either low hormone levels or other things...if so is that going to cause aging faster or less? Even if it's a no answer that doesn't say much. sometimes discussions are funner than just a plain no or yes because it doesn't tell you how it works?

Like for example if someone had a really low sperm count but was a guy would they age faster or slower? Or a woman with poor estrogen levels?

One of the aspects that made this difficult for me to answer is there's stuff on the net claiming aging can be low testosterone but I also saw stuff saying older guys keep testosterone levels fairly high up till the end. There is some false information it seems.

Also for people with like depression or GID they sometimes try partial hormone therapy at some point (not necessarily for transitioning but for other reasons)...if so it raises questions on the aging and hairline variables?

    1. River: All I know for certain is that hormones are incredibly complicated, and control just about every aspect of our body's regulation. That's why it's so important to get the advice of a professional endocrinologist rather than just self-medicating with weird herbals recommended by random strangers on the Internet.

You should be ashamed of yourself for making fun of people who can't read :D
